Race Report: My First 50K and the Lessons That Came With It

I signed up for my first 50K the way a lot of people do: on a whim, after a few beers, convinced by a friend who promised it would be fun. Six months later, standing at the start line in the dark with a headlamp and a nervous stomach, I wasn't so sure. The race was a local one, low-key, maybe 200 runners, with about 5,000 feet of climbing spread across a mix of forest service roads and singletrack.

The first ten miles were easy in a way that worried me. I felt great, the pace felt comfortable, and I kept having to remind myself to slow down. Everyone around me seemed to be moving faster than I wanted to go, and it took real discipline to let them pass. That's the first lesson: the people who sprint out of the gate are rarely the ones you see at the finish. By mile twenty, I'd caught most of them.

The Middle Miles

Miles fifteen through thirty were the real race. The climbing stacked up, the day warmed, and my legs started sending signals I didn't want to hear. This is where the mental work begins. I broke the race into smaller pieces, running from aid station to aid station, then from one landmark to the next. A creek crossing, a particular switchback, a fallen tree I remembered from training. Small goals kept me moving when the big picture felt overwhelming.

Nutrition was the other battle. I'd practiced with gels and chews during training, but on race day my stomach wanted nothing to do with them after hour three. What saved me was real food at the aid stations: potatoes dipped in salt, a few bites of a quesadilla, watermelon. I learned that eating on a schedule matters more than eating what you planned. If something sounds good and stays down, eat it.

The low point came around mile twenty-six. I don't remember exactly what triggered it, but suddenly everything felt impossible. My legs were heavy, my mood crashed, and I started doing math about how far I still had to go, which is a terrible idea. I sat down at an aid station for maybe five minutes, drank some broth, and forced myself back out. Within a mile, the fog lifted. It almost always does.

The Finish and What I'd Do Differently

The last five miles were the best part. Knowing the finish was close gave me energy I didn't think I had. I ran the final descent faster than I should have, crossed the line, and immediately sat down in the grass. The finish line of a first ultra is a strange place. You're proud, you're wrecked, and you're already thinking about the next one.

If I could go back, I'd do three things differently. I'd start slower, eat more consistently from the first hour, and spend less time worrying about what other runners were doing. The 50K taught me that ultrarunning is mostly a game of patience and problem-solving. The fitness gets you to the start line. The rest is just figuring things out as you go.
